What is this medicine?
Diflucan (fluconazole) is an anti-fungal antibiotic which used to treat fungal infections called candidiasis. This medication is prescribed for treatment such type of infections as vaginal, throat and fungal infections, infections of the urinary tract, peritonitis, and pneumonia. Diflucan works by killing sensitive fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
- electrolyte abnormalities
- history of irregular heart beat
- kidney disease
- an unusual or allergic reaction to fluconazole, other azole antifungals, medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
Take it orally once a day, with or without food using the measuring spoon. Take it at the same time each day if you want to get best result with a full glass of water. Diflucan make you feel better after 24 hours. However, your symptoms go away completely just after few days. If there is no change in your health after a few days consult with your doctor immediately.
Dosage for adults various from type of infection and consist:
- Genital thrush - 150 mg as a single dose
- Mucosal thrush - dose depends on where the infection is located 50 mg once daily during month.
- Fungal skin infections - 50 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks ;
- Internal fungal infections 400 mg on the first day then 200-400 mg once daily for 6-8 weeks or longer if needed.
- To stop you from getting fungal infections - 50-400 mg once daily while you have risk to get an infection;
- To stop infection caused by Cryptococcus from coming back - 100-200 mg once daily indefinitely
Dosage for children 4 weeks to 15 years old also various from type of infection and consist:
- mucosal infections - 3mg/kg once daily;
- internal fungal infections - 6-12mg/kg once daily;
- prevention of fungal infections - 3-12mg/kg once daily while at risk of getting an infection.
For children 2-4 weeks old it is same dose as above but given once every 2 days. A maximum dose of 12mg/kg every 2 days.
For children less than 2 weeks old it is same dose as above but given once every 3 days. Do not give more then 12mg/kg every 3 days.

If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Take your usually dose next day in the same regularly time.
Symptoms of Diflucan overdose may include: confusion or unusual thoughts or behavior. If you experience one of them call your doctor immediately.
Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:
- cisapride
- pimozide
- red yeast rice
This medicine may also interact with the following medications:
- birth control pills
- cyclosporine
- diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide
- medicines for diabetes that are taken by mouth
- medicines for high cholesterol like atorvastatin, lovastatin or simvastatin
- phenytoin
- ramelteon
- rifabutin
- rifampin
- some medicines for anxiety or sleep
- tacrolimus
- terfenadine
- theophylline
- warfarin
This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.
Visit your doctor or health care professional for regular checkups. If you are taking this medicine for a long time you may need blood work. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve. Some fungal infections need many weeks or months of treatment to cure.
Alcohol can increase possible damage to your liver. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
If you have a vaginal infection, do not have sex until you have finished your treatment. You can wear a sanitary napkin. Do not use tampons. Wear freshly washed cotton, not synthetic, panties.
Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:
- allergic reactions like skin rash or itching, hives, swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
- dark urine
- feeling dizzy or faint
- irregular heartbeat or chest pain
- redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
- trouble breathing
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- vomiting
- yellowing of the eyes or skin
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
- changes in how food tastes
- diarrhea
- headache
- stomach upset or nausea

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom.
